The old cemetery

The Jewish Cemetery in Viale Ariosto, created in 1777 outside Porta San Frediano, was open till 1870. Beforehand there were other cemeteries, but unfortunately nothing has remained of them. There are three monumental chapels, on the main avenue. The first, of the Levi family, has a pyramid shape and recalls Egyptians tombs, such as the second of the Servadio family, made in about 1875. The third chapel, of Franchetti family, was probably planned by the architect Treves who rearranged the little building at the entrance too. Visits to the Cemetery are possible by previous appointment (tel. 055/245252) c/o Museum of Jewish Art and History in Via Farini. The actual Cemetery is that situated in Via di Caciolle at Rifredi, a suburb of the town, built on Marco Treves’ plan. Inside, nearby the entrance, you can see the funerary chapel, in classical style and central plan. In the most ancient side there are very valuable chapels and tombs.
Open for visits the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 12pm or by reservation: 055.2346654. Admission fee – 3 €
