The Italian city of Spezia, in the Liguria region, will erect a monument to celebrate its role as the \u2018gateway to Zion\u2019. After the end of the Second World War, thousands of Jewish survivors clandestinely sailed from its port to reach the shores of British-controlled Palestine. Among the ships that departed from there was the famous Exodus.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s government launched a competition to present projects for such monument, including the restoration of the Pagliari Pier. Among the members of the examining board were Orly Bach, granddaughter of Captain Arazi, who supervised the operations in 1946, and chief rabbi of Genoa Giuseppe Momigliano.<\/p>\n

The first prize of 20,000 euros, plus an additional 100,000 to carry out the project, was awarded to ATI Jacopo Maugeri and Alessandro Tognetti and to Paolo Maloni and Ivano Barcellona from Studio M2B Progetti, while the artist designing the sculpture will be Walter Tacchini.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
