Pope Francis is being urged by experts to take greater care when referring to \u201chypocritical\u201d Pharisees, a stereotype that fueled centuries of bad blood between Catholics and Jews.<\/p>\n

Catholic-Jewish relations blossomed after the Second Vatican Council \u2014 which in 1965 finally urged respect for Judaism \u2014 and Francis is a clear friend of the Jews, insisting the Church continue to apologize for anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

But for centuries, Jesus\u2019s Jewish origins were obscured and the Jews were held collectively responsible for his death.<\/p>\n

And the pontiff\u2019s tendency to quote directly from New Testament passages where Jesus slams members of the small religious and political group as \u201chypocrites\u201d has been troubling rabbis concerned about anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

Some 400 Jewish and Christian Bible scholars gathered in Rome last week to exchange research notes on the Pharisees, a group about which little is known historically but which came to represent all Jews in Catholic tradition. To Jews, the Pharisees include some of the earliest of the Sages whose collective legal and spiritual debates over some seven centuries, until the fifth century CE, are recorded in the vast compilation called the Talmud, Judaism\u2019s central post-Biblical text.<\/p>\n

But the image of the \u201ctreacherous\u201d Pharisees appears down the centuries in dictionaries, academic articles, films and Protestant and Catholic preaching, with the word \u201cPharisee\u201d becoming a synonym for hypocrite in the West.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey lacked life. They were, so to speak, \u2018starched.\u2019 They were rigid\u2026 The people didn\u2019t matter to them: The Law mattered to them,\u201d Francis said of Pharisees in a homily in October.<\/p>\n

The 110-year-old Pontifical Biblical Institute, headed by Jesuits, organized the Rome conference and helped write a speech Francis delivered to the participants Thursday in which he acknowledged the dangers of quoting the Bible without context.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe word \u2018Pharisee\u2019 often means \u2018hypocritical\u2019 or \u2018presumptuous\u2019 person. For many Jews, however, the Pharisees are the founders of Rabbinic Judaism and therefore their spiritual ancestors,\u201d the Argentine pontiff said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Damaging\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHistory has favored negative images of the Pharisees, despite there not being any concrete basis in evangelical narratives,\u201d he said, describing the stereotype as \u201cone of the oldest and most damaging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis asked the experts to carry on with their research in order to arrive at a \u201cmore accurate vision of this religious group,\u201d which will contribute to \u201ccombating anti-Semitism\u201d and \u201covercoming old prejudices.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also admitted the Pharisees should be referred to \u201cin a more appropriate way in teaching and preaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Rabbi David Rosen, director of interfaith affairs at the American Jewish Committee (AJC), merely mentioning the word Pharisaic \u201cdoes not make somebody an anti-Semite,\u201d but \u201cit is definitely a component of anti-Semitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

People should \u201cput it in context, or at least use \u2018those Pharisees\u2019 or \u2018those Jews,’\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve raised the issue\u201d with the pope, he said, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t think he will use things in quite the same cavalier manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Argentine Rabbi Abraham Skorka, an old friend of the pope, said Francis would now know \u201chow to present the Pharisees.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had already talked about it, but he replied, \u2018I\u2019m quoting the New Testament,’\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pope has so many things on his mind,\u201d he said, but insisted: \u201cIt is both a small and a big detail at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amy-Jill Levine, a New Testament and Jewish Studies professor, said it was important to \u201ctranslate scholarly findings into how Christian leaders preach and teach about the Pharisees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skorka, who has known Francis for years and often corresponds with him by email, said the aim was \u201cto polish the areas of friction in Jewish-Catholic relations.\u201d<\/p>\n
