By Pagine Ebraiche staff

For the second consecutive summer, the Memorial of the Shoah of Milan is open at night to provide shelter to refugees. With the summer, thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East are reaching Italian shores. Many of them manage to get to Northern Italy by train. In Milan, among the centers giving them assistance, there is also the Memorial of the Shoah which is situated in the warehouse of the train station, on the very same platform where trains to Nazi camps departed during the Second World War.
“Last year, we hosted over 4,500 people from 26 different countries,” explains vice-president of the Foundation of the Memorial Roberto Jarach. “This year the situation is even more complicated, because borders are shut. We felt that it was important to give our contribution.”

A Garden of Righteous in Tunis

img header

By Daniel Reichel

The first Garden of the Righteous in an Arab country was inaugurated in Tunis on July 15. Inspired by the one at the Monte Stella in Milan (that took Yad Vashem as a model), the Garden was created thanks to the collaboration between the Italian organization, Gariwo and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is located inside the Italian Embassy in Tunis. “After what happened in Nice, the inauguration of a Garden against terrorism in Tunis has an even greater meaning,” said the president of Gariwo, Gabriele Nissim before the ceremony, referring to the terrorist attack in France.
Attending the ceremony were also Nobel Prize winner in 2015, Abdessatar Ben Moussa and Ambassador Raimondo De Cardona. The three of them dedicated the first trees in the Garden to four Arab and Muslim Righteous of past and present time.

Primo Levi, maître
du savoir-revivre

img

Mirrors

img

By Susanna Calimani*

One of the things I like the most among all Jewish laws and rules, are those about shivà, the seven days of mourning prescribed to the close relatives of someone who passes away and leaves us here, still.
The wake and the funeral are just the beginning, and then you rip your shirt, you cannot cook, wash, wear clean clothes, you cannot see yourself in the mirror, or sit on a comfortable chair. You are not allowed to rejoice at anything. You are supposed to be taken care of and let yourself into the deepest misery, deeper than the one you already had. You are not allowed any relief because you have to feel all your sorrow; you cannot listen to music since the only thing you should listen to is your mourning.
After seven days of lamentation you are allowed to go back to your almost normal life, that anyway will never be the same.

*Susanna Calimani is a wandering economist, currently based in Frankfurt.

Angelo Donati, the Italian War-Hero Celebrated on the Nice Promenade

img header

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

It is well known that Nice is the most Italian city in France, not only because the city was Italian until 1860 and the legendary Giuseppe Garibaldi was born there, but also because Italians are currently the second largest foreign group in Nice and many more go there on vacation.
As well, the Promenade des Anglais, where the hideous terror attack was carried out on Thursday, July 14, celebrates an Italian figure: at number 43, a Memorial plaque remembers Angelo Donati (1885-1960).

El túnel perdido

img

By Guido Vitale

They’re Hostile to Israel. So Why Paying a Visit?

img

By Ariel David*

Peace must be on the verge of breaking out in the Middle East. Hamas is apparently just a political party that has resorted to terrorism solely because of "the isolation of Gaza."
Meanwhile, "Christians, Muslims and Jews are living peacefully together" in Bethlehem (a Palestinian town where there are no Jews and the Christian population has been declining for decades).
These are some of the geopolitical fantasies that emerged during last week's visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories by leaders of Italy's Five Star Movement, the anti-establishment party that has shaken Italian politics since it was founded in 2009 by Beppe Grillo, a popular comedian turned firebrand demagogue.
