Fight against Anti-Semitism among the Priorities for Italy’s OSCE Chairmanship

Italy will hold the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe for the year 2018.
“Strengthening multilateralism as an instrument to relaunch the "spirit of Helsinki" and to further promote peace, security, stability and co-operation is Italy’s key priority for its 2018 OSCE Chairmanship,” said today the Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano as he took up the post of Chairperson-in-Office of the regional security organization.
Among the priorities listed by Alfano in Vienna is the fight against hatred, intolerance and anti-Semitism. In this field, the minister mentioned the event organized in cooperation with the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) and with the Center for Jewish Contemporary Documentation (Cdec) at the Italian Foreign Ministry: the international conference on the responsibility of States and institutions in the fight against anti-Semitism. The conference will be an opportunity to share the best practices and assess the situation. The idea is to grow the forum into a permanent platform.

Jews of Libya, a Renovated Room
to Narrate Exodus and Rebirth

img header

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

A renovated room to tell a great and complex story. The inauguration of the new room devoted to Libyan Judaism at the Jewish Museum of Rome ideally closed the twelve months of initiatives organized on the fiftieth anniversary of the forced exodus from the country and the arrival in Italy: conferences, round-table discussions, cultural projects, but also the visit from Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the synagogue, a highly meaningful visit for various reasons.
Inside the synagogue, the Prime Minister said: “The exodus of the Jews from Libya impoverished that country, just like now, and I say that as a Christian, there is a risk of another impoverishment, because in many countries Christian communities might be marginalised or even banished”. He then expressed his appreciation for the “breath of cosmopolitan air” that the Libyan Jews brought with them.

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

The Union of the Italian Jewish Communities has joined the #WeRemember campaign launched by the World Jewish Congress to promote the knowledge and awareness of what happened during the Shoah.
“We must remember because the ‘never again’ seems to keep on repeating itself again and again. It is a responsability of new generations to teach their friends what horrors can be generated by hatred”, explained the president of the WJC Ronald Lauder.

Mujeres

img

Memory

img

By Daniela Fubini*

It started already. The annual Italian stream of consciousness on social and regular media: new shocking or plainly realistic testimonials, old books being revamped by the random editor who wants to be part of the memory business, theaters bringing Primo Levi back to life on stage, and an endless series of conferences, memorial evenings, quotes by politicians published on increasingly unread newspapers. First it was one day, then it became one weekend, then a week, now as soon as January begins everyone in Italy switches on the memory channel and starts broadcasting non-stop till the end of the month.

‘This Was a King Who Betrayed His Country’

img headerBy Ben Cohen

Seventy-three years after the end of the Second World War, the gallery of European leaders who proudly collaborated with the Nazi German regime remains firmly established. France had Marshal Philippe Pétain. Romania had the former army officer and prime minister Ion Antonescu. And Italy, of course, had Benito Mussolini, the former socialist parliamentarian who reinvented himself as “Il Duce” at the head of Italy’s fascist movement.
All of these wartime dictators had their indispensable sidekicks. In Mussolini’s case, among their number was King Victor Emmanuel III of the House of Savoy, who acceded to the throne in 1900 and temporarily held the titles of “Emperor of Ethiopia” and “King of the Albanians” during a 46-year reign that ended with Italy devastated by fascist rule. It was the king who enabled Mussolini to become an unchallenged dictator by 1928. And it was the king who provided his signature on the notorious Italian “Racial Laws” of 1938, which stripped Jews of basic civil rights, forbade them to enter into marriages with non-Jews, confiscated their property, and banned them from jobs in government and finance.
