Italy Marks the Liberation from Nazi-Fascism

The Resistance was a diverse choral movement on a large scale, almost exclusively interpreted as a synonym of the war led by the Partisans for a long time”. This is what Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Republic of Italy, pointed out during his speech in Casoli on April 25, where he compared the Resistance to the Italian reunification, referring to the resilient patriots of the country. “On the one hand, the butchers, the tormentors and the persecutors of the Jews; on the other, a sense of civilization, freedom and respect for the inviolable rights of each individual”.
In the name of those who fought for civilization, freedom and respect for human rights, the major representatives of the Italian Jewish Communities held a parade and rallied throughout Italy. This happened, for example, in Milan, where not only did the local Jewish Community stand up for fundamental rights, but also the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities together with the Jewish Brigade, whose banners led the procession, were present.

Bibi am Start des Giro d’Italia

Die Erwartungen an den Giro d’Italia steigen. Dieses Jahr wird die 101. Veranstaltung der Corsa Rosa in Jerusalem beginnen. Diese Veranstaltung ist das wichtigste Sportereignis seit der Gründung Israels im Jahr 1948. Und während die Vorbereitungen weitergehen, gewinnt die Israel Cycling Academy, Israels erstes Profi-Radsport-Team, zu Beginn des Rennens dank einer Wildcard, einen neuen Fan.
Auch Ministerpräsident Benjamin Netanyahu hat sich in einem spielerischen Video zusammen mit Sylvan Adams, Ehrenpräsident des Great Start Komitees und Miteigentümer des Teams, dafür entschieden, sich für eine gemeinsame Leidenschaft auf zwei Rädern zu engagieren. Am 4. Mai, zu Beginn des Zeitfahrens, mit dem der Wettkampf eröffnet wird, wird er auch dort sein. Adams selbst teilt Pagine Ebraiche seine Teilnahme im Voraus mit. Und viele werden sich dem Premierminister anschließen, unter ihnen Minister und diplomatische Vertreter Israels und Italiens.

Milán protesta contra el antisemitismo recordando a Mireille Knoll

Milán honra la memoria de Mireille Knoll, que sobrevivió a la Shoá pero fue víctima del actual antisemitismo en París. Su vecino musulmán la asesinó el marzo pasado. Es una tragedia que muestra que aún hay mucho que hacer para combatir el veneno y la violencia antisemita en Francia y en toda Europa. Por eso la comunidad judía de Milán se ha movilizado y ha solicitado al ayuntamiento de la ciudad una muestra de solidaridad. En efecto, hace unas horas, se ha puesto delante del Palazzo Reale un manifiesto en recuerdo de Knoll.

Vercelli, the Path of Freedom

“Siamo liberi!”
Throughout history, Jews have spoken those words at various times: “We are free!” Undoubtedly, it has not been easy for the small minority, which often becomes the scapegoat for others.
The year 1848 brought a ray of hope to the Jewish minority of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which corresponds to the northwestern portion of present-day Italy, plus the large Mediterranean island of Sardinia. It was in this year that King Charles Albert I granted full rights and citizenship to the Jews of his kingdom. At this point in time, the Piedmontese town of Vercelli had around 600 Jews (out of a population of roughly 25,000) who were part of a modest but economically stable community.
The Foa family, had already been living in Vercelli for many years by that time. They had faced the establishment of the ghetto in 1724, making it of the last ghettos to be formed in Italy, the first one having been formed at Venice in 1516.

Entre un misil y otro, volví a leer La Ilíada o el poema de la fuerza, un texto que Simone Weil escribió en 1937, advirtiendo que la guerra se estaba acercando. La fuerza es una ilusión, escribe, porque todos creen que pueden hacer lo que quieren y no quieren entender que no todo está en su mano. Una visión desencantada de la guerra. No sé si es verdad, o por lo menos si siempre ha sido verdad. Sin embargo, es útil tenerlo en cuenta.

Hazak

When the Jews are invited to read or to bless a Torah passage, at the end of the reading the audience says goodbye with the expression: “Hazak!”. Usually the full expression is “Hazak veEmatz, be strong and brave”. The sentence is taken from Deuteronomy 31,7, using one of Moshe’s recommendations to Yehoshua, as if to say from master to disciple. Lately, an esteemed italki university professor, close to one of the great Italian rabbis due to his personal history, said to me: “A rabbi should have three things: mind, heart and balls”. (I am sorry, I’m quoting). Using the word “balls” he referred to courage and sense of responsibility, for oneself and for Jewish people in general.

Jerusalem gearing up for Giro

Things are heating up, in the best sense of the term – cycling- wise – in Jerusalem.
Last week we had the inaugural GFNY “cycling marathon” in and around the city. Over 1,300 cyclists of varying levels of athletic prowess took part in the 70 km. and 130 km. heats, with some of the cream of the local two-wheeler community – and quite a few top foreigners – taking the opportunity to whiz through the capital, and up and down the beautiful and sometimes pretty challenging Jerusalem Hills.
You could say that this event has helped to put Jerusalem well and truly on the international cycling map. But, just in case it didn’t quite do it, next Friday (May 4) the Giro d’Italia, one of the top three road cycling races in the world, will kick off from this fair city of ours.
