Israel Embraces the Giro D’Italia

img header

By Adam Smulevich

The first leg of the Giro d’Italia in Israel was a huge success.
It was the first time that a Grand Tour started outside Europe and the response of the Israeli public was extraordinary; beyond every expectation. The Giro was welcome with tremendous enthusiasm in every city it cycled through, starting on Friday in Jerusalem and arriving on Sunday in Eilat.
Equally the local athletes and the members of the Israel Cycling Academy distinguished themselves on many occasions (especially thanks to the performances of the Canadian cyclist Guillaume Boivin, who held the first position for many kilometers in two segments). As well, everyone from the first to the very last of the athletes, without distinction between team and nationality, was welcomed with applause and encouragement by Israelis on the streets.

'Abbas' Mendacious Allegations Are Worrisome'

img

By Sandro De Bernardin*

"As Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, I was dismayed and very worried by the comments made by Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, on 2 May in which he used antisemitic stereotypes in public discourse, falsely claiming that the Holocaust was a result of Jews’ “social function” and purported association with loans and banking.
Making mendacious allegations about Jews controlling the economy is one of the typical examples of antisemitic stereotypes denounced in the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism. Attempts to blame the Jews for causing their own genocide is a clear case of Holocaust distortion as spelt out in the IHRA Working Definition of Holocaust Denial and Distortion".

The Italian cycling champion who saved Jews is given honorary Israeli citizenship

img headerBy Barry Davis*

Gino Bartali had already won the Tour de France once and the Giro d’Italia twice when he started taking the most dramatic bicycle rides of his life.
Bartali was an Italian cyclist who grew up in a Tuscan village and whose championships in the mid-1930s were the pride of the nation — and Benito Mussolini’s fascist government. But the admiration was not mutual: Bartali refused requests to dedicate his Tour de France championship to the dictator, and later began working to undermine fascism and save its victims.
In the early 1940s, Bartali worked secretly as a courier for the Italian resistance. Nicknamed the “Iron Man of Tuscany,” Bartali was famous for hours-long training rides through the Tuscan Hills, and he would hide documents in his bicycle frame and ferry them between resistance bases.
