"Separation of religion and state, a core principle of the Italian Republic"
By Pagine
Ebraiche staff
The separation between religion and state is a core principle of the
Italian Republic, and Italian political leaders should always keep it
in mind, the Vicepresident of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities
Giulio Disegni wrote in a Pagine Ebraiche column commenting the current
Italian political crisis.
Disegni criticized the inappropriate use of religious symbols and objects by the Minister of Interior Matteo Salvini.
"The use and reference to religious symbols in public events,
increasingly brazen in recent months, started in Milan on February 25,
when the Minister of Interior swore on the Gospel in the Duomo Square.
On May 18, he swore on a rosary. This is just to mention the most
striking episodes," Disegni wrote. "Not to mention what happened at the
beginning of the government crisis, on August 8, when, during his tour
in Calabria, he again publicly flaunted the rosary," he continued.

Ambassador Ofer Sachs’ goodbye:
“Italy will always be part of me”
By Pagine Ebraiche staff
Ofer
Sachs’ mandate as Israel ambassador in Italy, who has been in charge
since 2016, is coming to an end. In a message spread on social media,
he reflected about his time working as embassador, marked by many
meaningful moments: “Three years of hard challenges, numerous successes
and official visits of great relevance”, he underlined, recalling the
mission of Reuven Rivlin in Italy and that of his counterpart Sergio
Mattarella in Israel.
One reason of pride is the great number of delegations created in the
academic, scientific, entrepreneurial and cultural fields, which have
made “the thousand faces of Israel” known. So much has been done, he
said, “and so much is yet to be done”. Sachs recalled the celebrations
for 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence and for the relationship
between the two countries..

Andrea Doria, fostering values since 1895
By Pagine
Ebraiche staff
In 1895, a group of dissidents from Società Ginnastica Cristoforo
Colombo founded Società Ginnastica Andrea Doria, based in Carignano, an
elegant district in the centre of Genoa. The founding group had
previously performed in improvised shows in via Corsica, using
telephone poles as climbing poles, tree branches as parallel bars, and
benches as vaulting horses – as reported by a Ligurian information
website.
Well over a century later, Società Ginnastica Andrea Doria has become a
sporting institution in Genoa and has several sections, from gymnastics
(needless to say) to water polo, from martial arts to tennis. "Our
sports company is the oldest one in Genoa. In the early 20th century,
our teams distinguished themselves in various sports", said president
Chicco Veroli, who is also councillor of the Union of Italian Jewish
Communities representing the city of Genoa.

Pie XII et son ami juif
Gadi Luzzatto Voghera*

Agnes Heller
By David Bidussa*
Agnes
Heller, the Hungarian philosopher who recently passed away, belonged to
a group of public figures who did not pay homage to the powerful, even
when today's powerful was, until yesterday, an opponent. Because what
matters is only what the powerful do once they become powerful, not if
they legitimized their power by acting as if they were still in the
opposition.

historian of social ideas.

Italian Jewish community launches campaign to restore its Jewish literary heritage
By Marcy Oster*
A
collection of about 8,000 antique Jewish books in Italy is in need of
restoration and the country’s main Jewish body is taking up the
challenge.
The Union of Italian Jewish Communities, or UECI, has launched a
crowdfunding campaign to preserve the Italian Jewish literary heritage.
The books include the collection of the Italian Rabbinical Center,
which had its library seized by the Nazis during World War II but was
later returned to Italy. It also includes rare books that were saved
during the 1966 flood of Florence.
*The article was published in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on June 29, 2019.
