Italy adopts IHRA Definition of Anti-Semitism
By Pagine
Ebraiche staff
Last
week the Italian government approved the operational definition of
anti-Semitism formulated by the International Holocaust Remembrance
Alliance. The move marks a turning point that aligns Italy with other
European countries and that comes together with the formalization of
the appointment of Professor Milena Santerini as national coordinator
against anti-Semitism.
The request to adopt the definition had been repeatedly formulated by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities.
"The Italian government - commented UCEI President Noemi Di Segni – is
writing a fundamental page in the fight against anti-Jewish hatred in
all its forms, including the particularly insidious one of those who
undermine Israel's right to exist and defend itself. The gap is finally
filled, as already it was done by other European countries, on the
basis of the resolution of the European Parliament and the most recent
and unanimous decision of the Council of Europe. Today is an important
day that will mark the beginning of a process of further technical and
legal examination and sharing with other institutions in the country.”

Italian government appoints national coordinator against anti-Semitism
By Pagine Ebraiche staff
The Italian government has appointed its first national
coordinator in the fight against anti-Semitism: the selected official
is Milena Santerini, professor of pedagogy at the Catholic University
and vice president of the Shoah Memorial in Milan.
“From a personal point of view I am very honored and I feel a great
responsibility. Anti-Semitism is not an issue just for some citizens
but for the whole society, which must collectively choose whether to
grow along the path of peaceful coexistence or whether to choose the
path of exclusion and discrimination. Anti-Semitism
therefore concerns the whole of Italy and we are in a particular moment
in which we have been assisting in a growth of episodes of hatred,” she
told Pagine Ebraiche.

Eine unauflösbare Verbindung
Anna Foa*

A true barbarian
By David Bidussa*
I
happened to read by chance some pages by Michel de Montaigne, pages
dedicated to cannibals (Essays, Book I, chap. XXXI). The philosopher
reflects on the episodes of cannibalism that characterized the
religious war between Catholics and Protestants. When it comes to
brutality, civilized Europe has nothing to learn from the savages of
the Americas. A true barbarian is he who believes he is not.
*David Bidussa is a
historian of social ideas.

synagogue vandal caught on video
By JTA staff*
Police
in the northeast Italian city of Trieste analyzed security videos to
identify and arrest a man suspected of vandalizing the city’s synagogue
twice in the past few months.
The suspect was accused of breaking two windows “for the purposes of ethnic-religious hatred,” police said.
A statement issued this week said careful analysis of the video enabled
police to identify the suspect, an unemployed Italian man around 30
years old who was already “known to the police.”They said he punched
out exterior windows at the synagogue on Oct. 24, 2019, and Jan. 3.
