New MEIS director Rabbi Spagnoletto
takes office
By Pagine Ebraiche staff
On
the day of the inauguration of its tenure in Ferrara, Rabbi
Spagnoletto, the newly-appointed Director of the National Museum of
Italian Judaism and the Shoah (MEIS) posed a new challenge, namely
focusing on younger generations’ education.
In the presence of Ferrarese military and civil authorities, prefect
Michele Campanaro, police commissioner Cesare Capocasa, archbishop Gian
Carlo Perego and President of the Ferrarese Jewish community Fortunato
Arbib, Spagnoletto was introduced by MEIS president Dario Disegni.
“In spite of the Covid-19 emergency, the Museum has never stopped
working, but has been focusing on new online initiatives instead. We
are now pleased to welcome you back on this Inauguration Day dedicated
to Amedeo Spagnoletto, MEIS’ new director.”

Israeli Ambassador to Rome addresses
Senate Foreign Affairs Committee
By Pagine
Ebraiche staff
Europe
must beware of Turkish and Iranian ambitions. This is what Israel
Ambassador to Italy Dror Eydar highlighted in his speech before the
Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, dedicated to “Italian priorities
in the framework of the new geopolitical equilibria in the Greater
Middle East.”
After a long presentation to illustrate the complex geopolitical
situation Israel finds itself in – notably Turkey’s and Iran’s
intimidating expansionism – Eydar answered to some senators’ speeches
on the topic of planned annexation by Israel of some parts of the West
Bank.

The police prefect of Milan Renato Saccone visited the city’s Garden of Righteous for the first time last week.

inadequate, because we are all human beings but we can all aspire to be
Righteous,” he said.
The Garden was established in 2003 as result of the collaboration
between the Gariwo Association, the Municipality of Milan and the Union
of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI).
The prefect was escorted by the president of Gariwo Gabriele Nissim and UCEI Vice-President Giorgio Mortara.

History-telling
By David Bidussa*
Regarding
statues: retelling history is never consoling and it is good that it is
divisive. It is one of the reasons why history is a discussion in the
present about the past, while still thinking about the future that is
hoped for. Otherwise the goal would become to tell fairy tales with a
happy ending. We have enough myths and made-up stories.

Israeli mask maker Sonovia expects 99% coronavirus success after lab test

By Reuters*
Sonovia's
reusable anti-viral masks are coated in zinc oxide nanoparticles that
destroy bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which it says can help stop the
spread of the coronavirus.
Tests in the Micro spectrum (Weipu Jishu) lab in Shanghai had
demonstrated that the washable fabric used in its masks neutralized
more than 90% of the coronavirus to which it was exposed, Sonovia said
on Monday.
Liat Goldhammer, Sonovia's chief technology officer, said that in the
coming weeks the fabric, which can also be used in textiles for
hospitals, protective equipment, and clothing, will be able to
neutralize almost 99% of the coronavirus.
Sonovia says its clients include German manufacturers Bruckner and
Weber Ultrasonics, and hospitals in Germany and the United States.
It is conducting a pilot at Adler Plastic in Italy to use its fabric in
vehicles and public transport and is selling its masks online to retail
consumers.
