Italy Mourns the Loss of Rabbi
and Teacher Giuseppe Laras

img header

By Adam Smulevich

Italy mourns the passing of Rabbi Giuseppe Laras, long-serving chief rabbi in Milan, Leghorn and Ancona and former president of the Italian Rabbinic Assembly. Rav Laras represented a fundamental figure not only for Italian Judaism, but for the entire society. Born in 1935 in Turin, the rabbi was deeply marked by the Shoah. He lost his mother and grandmother, and narrowly escaped deportation himself.
He was a protagonist in the mission of interfaith dialogue. In his last message published after his death, Rav Laras stressed: "It is up to all of us, Christians and Jews, to seize the opportunity to make the Bible the future, different and yet synergic, for our two Communities of Faith, to turn it into a source of life for Western civilization. And it is extremely urgent to give back to the Bible its real voice, which can in no way be reduced to a secular manual for subsistence, goodwill and pacifism of sorts".

Miedo

img

David Bidussa*

Black Friday's Light

img

By Daniela Fubini*

In a few days the celebrations for Hanukkah will be in full throttle, and all of a sudden the Black Friday makes totally sense. First it seemed like a flu that we contracted by being too close to our American broad - and richer - family; not on a government level, where they have absolutely no clue how to handle the reality that family you don’t choose. The American Jewry is family, although different, strange at times, and very high maintenance. But anyway, back to Black Friday.
We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here, so why should we celebrate it’s nemesis, the orgy of consumerism that drags millions of Americans to every physical and online store? Then I realized how close it comes to Hanukkah and it all made sense. Would have been better to understand this earlier, and scope every available store in half a day, to get all gifts done - until Purim, at least.

A Thanksgiving Pasta Inspired by Roman Jews

img headerBy Elin Schoen Brockman

It’s been 32 years since Calvin Trillin’s famous proposal, in the New Yorker, that Spaghetti alla Carbonara replace turkey as our national Thanksgiving dish. After all, Trillin argued, the Indians could have brought it to that first Thanksgiving dinner (their ancestors having learned how to make it from Christopher Columbus).
In the intervening years, the Carbonaristas have not abandoned the cause. Last Thanksgiving, the New York Times published Ian Fisher’s account of attempting to master this seemingly simple Roman dish, which, at its most basic—and therefore, its best—involves a sauce of eggs enhanced with some form of bacon (usually guanciale or pancetta), and, on top of that, Pecorino Romano cheese.
