Claudia De Benedetti Awarded the Yakir Maccabi

Claudia De Benedetti was awarded the “Yakir Maccabi Award” by the Maccabi World Union. The ceremony took place during the 22nd Maccabiah Games in Israel from July 1 to July 13. De Benedetti, a native of Turin, is the president of the Casale Ebraica Foundation and the director of the Jewish Museum in Casale, Piedmont. She first participated in the Maccabiah Games, also known as the Jewish Olympics, in 1977, when she won a silver medal in fencing. In 2005, at the 17th Maccabiah Games, she entered Tel Aviv Stadium as head of the Italian delegation. The Yakir Maccabi Award is given every four years after a three-year selection process. It recognizes sustained and exceptional voluntary service to the Maccabi movement, the fight against antisemitism, and relations within the Jewish diaspora. “Receiving this award and sharing the ceremony with the many friends who have long been active in the movement was incredibly emotional,” Claudia De Benedetti commented. “It was an invitation to commit with conviction to the future of our people.”
