“Otto per mille”
by Guido Vitale*

The “Corte dei conti”, the Italian court that controls public spending, has issued an opinion on the transfer of money from the state to religious confessions using the tax-deduction mechanism known as “Otto per mille”. This represents a powerful call for clarity and morality that everyone, including Italian Jews, should take seriously.

Italian Word of the Week:
URTISTI
by Daniela Gross

Urtisti, the word of the week, is quite uncommon, and quite hard to understand if you are not Roman. It comes from the verb “urtare”, which probably derives from the Provencal, and it means to bump into someone or something. Since the end of the 19th century, the term “urtista” has been used to mean peddler, specifically that kind of peddler who in Rome sells souvenirs to Catholic pilgrims.

There are “urtisti” close to any important monument - the Coliseum, the Vatican, the Ara Coeli - and they sell postcards, magnets, bracelets, rosaries, little statues. It can sound weird, but all of them are Jewish. Their origins date back to a historical period when it was considered inappropriate for Catholics to sell that kind of things to the pilgrims in visit to the Capital.  Hence, a specific authorization by the Pope allowed some Jews to do it.

The definition of “urtista” comes from the habit of peddlers, in the past, of hitting passers to call their attention. Today there are 63 official vendors, but only a half are active. Long time ago they left the ancient boxes full of memorabilia with which they used to go around, and found a more comfortable location in stalls. Their history, reconstructed and displayed until December 7 at the Rome’s Museum in Trastevere, is a tradition as meaningful for Rome as for the identity of Rome’s Jewish Community.

Venice Greets Its New
Chief Rabbi

By Adam Smulevich

"In the past, Judaism has given the world the rules of ethics through the Ten Commandments, teaching basic concepts such as justice and love for others and for the stranger. In spite of that Jewish principles are not fully applied in society today. We live in an age in which man has no points of reference. If there is an element that characterizes Jewish history and identity, it is awareness of knowing where we come from and where we want and need to go”.
This message was sent by the new Chief Rabbi of Venice Scialom Bahbout during the inauguration ceremony that marked, in an official way, the beginning of his work in the Community.

The Union of Italian Jewish Youth at a Crossroads

The Union of Italian Jewish Youth (UGEI), which represents Italian Jewish students and young professionals ages 18-35, has failed to elect its new board for 2015. Due to a lack of candidates, the participants of the twentieth congress of the organization, which took place in Florence from November 28th to November 30th, have decided to convene an extraordinary congress to focus on the most important issues concerning the future of the UGEI as well as to elect the new board. An emergency committee to assist the 2014 board in preparing the event was also formed. These decisions were taken by the organization after three intense days in Florence. The extraordinary Congress will take place in Milan next spring.

Double Life -Where Arabs Dance

By Daniela Fubini*

Life in Israel brings out all your multiple identities. Some of us new (or veteran) immigrants keep several identities and live happily ever after, while others find it harder to blend in and keep expecting Western politeness and customer service in a place where those concepts are so far away to seem from outer space. But most of us, the new comers, are Jewish, and in Israel, these days, that is enough to feel at home completely, even when the waiter is rude or has no clue about the menu he/she is supposed to know like the Shema Israel, by heart.
