Italian Word of the Week:
LUCI
by Daniela Gross

“Luci”, the word of the week, is strictly related to Hanukkah. Admittedly, Hanukkah is Hanukkah in Italy as all it is around the world. The only difference is that sometimes Italians transliterate this Hebrew word as “Chanukkah”, which it is not a big deal.

However, occasionally we prefer to use the Italian adaptation and we talk about the “Festa delle luci – Festival of Lights”. Clearly it is not a translation, because it doesn’t reflect in any way the Hebrew meaning, which is is in memory of the rededication of the Temple after the Maccabean revolt. More accurately, this phrase is related to the joy and happiness communicated by the candles that we light, night after night, for eight days.

In Italy this festive feeling is more of a private issue, rather than a public one. Sure, we light the candles at the synagogue, and there are parties in any Jewish Community. The kids play with dreidl (but we rather call them with the Hebrew term “sevivon”), and receive a lot of gifts. In some cities a big Hanukkiah is also lighted in public places.

Given the small number of the Italian Jews, however, Hanukkah is an event in some way confined to the interior of our Jewish world. You don’t find in stores books about Hanukkah, dreidls, or holiday cards. You don’t hear a lot about it on the radio or on television. You don’t spend hours going around to admire fancy Hanukkah menorahs displayed in people’s houses’ windows, as you can do in Israel. But Hanukkah is Hanukkah, in Italy as it is all around the world. The only thing that matters is to celebrate its lights with our dear ones.

Arnaldo Momigliano, a Life
for Historiography

By Lauren Waldman*

“Historians are supposed to be discoverers of truths,” this simple adage by Arnaldo Momigliano can help us understand his drive to investigate the history of the ancient world. Momigliano was an Italian Jew, which already gave him a unique view on the world. The Jewish communities of Italy are diverse and distinctive at once, having undergone countless indignities through the centuries, and yet persevering. Momigliano is a case in point, because he did not let the oppression and racism that would eventually lead to the devastation of the Holocaust impede his stellar career as a writer of historiography.

OUT OF THE BOOT
Federica, a Fashionista
in Tel Aviv

By Simone Somekh*

“Hold on, hold on one second,” she says on the phone, running out of breath. “I need to get on the bus.”

As soon as she pays her ride and finds the last free seat on the bus, she wears her earphones again and starts talking as if there had been no interruption. It’s probably the espresso shot she regularly has that makes her so active in the morning. “We have an event coming up next week, there’s so much work in the office right now,” she says. “After work I have to run to Hebrew class. They usually give me a lot of homework.”
“And then?” I ask. “Are you going home?”
“No,” she quickly replies. “I’m going to a party.”

*Simone Somekh is a student at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and works as a freelance writer. Shirly Piperno, fashion styling and communication student at Istituto Marangoni, London, contributed reporting.

Francesco Matalon

Numbers

By Anna Momigliano*

Recently a journalist friend of mine asked me a question about the number of Jews in Italy. He was editing an article in which the author was claiming that according to “official sources”, there are only 23,000 Jews in Italy. “This seems a little strange, are there that few Jews in Italy?", asked my editor friend.

*Anna Momigliano is an Italian journalist currently based in Milan.
