A Hatred Blacklist
By Daniela Gross

Sometimes the past comes back and is almost unbearable, as it happened at the beginning of last week. Last Monday, an article on the Italian daily Corriere della Sera recounted how many Jews were traded for money to the Nazis, when Rome was under the Third Reich occupation. “The Jewish Community just restored the list of people who, after the raid held on October 16, 1943, sold Jews to the Nazis and Fascists. But the Community said that this blacklist won’t ever be made public,” wrote Manuela Pelati.

The list is the result of research curated by Silvia Haia Antonucci and Claudio Procaccia with the support of the historian Amedeo Osti Guerrazzi and of the demographer Daniele Spizzichino, which also describes the prices of those horrible deals, aimed at deportation. Men were the most profitable victims, worth 5,000 lire (about 5,000 current euros). A woman was considered worthy of about 3,000 lire, and a child about 1,500 lire.

These bargains took place essentially after more than a thousand Jews had been deported from the ancient Ghetto of Rome, on October 16. Then, Nazis and Fascists started a ferocious persecution, especially against 20-35 year old Jewish men. The raid involved 747 people, who were sent to Nazi camps. About half of them were traded for money. It was already known that, also in Italy, informers played a crucial role in the Jewish deportation. And we cannot forget that, as the historian Claudio Procaccia reminds , “85% of Roman Jews found salvation thanks to the help of private citizens and of religious institutions.”
However, the evidence of such wide spread human trafficking is shocking.

Milan and Tel Aviv, Partners
in Innovation

By Daniel Reichel

Innovation and a strong involvement of the citizens in urban life are only some of the issues which the sister cities of Milan and Tel Aviv are working on together.
Tel Aviv is becoming more and more an international example of a new concept of city: the World Smart City award that Tel Aviv Municipality recently received is the acknowledgement of this new spirit. This way of rethinking the ways of life in the city was presented to the Italian public during an event at the Israeli Pavilion at Milan EXPO 2015.
“We are the Start-up city of the start-up nation,” said the mayor of Tel Aviv Ron Huldai, who visited Milan and met the city mayor Giuliano Pisapia. “We are proud to be here in Israel Pavilion at EXPO 2015,” added Hila Oren, CEO of Global Tel Aviv.

Celebrating Italy in Israel

By Rossella Tercatin

At the end of April, the Italian flag, together with the European flag, was displayed in a very special venue; Israel’s Independence Hall in Tel Aviv. The occasion was an event celebrating Yom Hatzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. The event also marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Italy. The conference commemorated Enzo Sereni, an Italian Jew who moved to British Mandate Palestine in the 20s and then returned to Italy to fight the Nazis during World War II. He was captured and killed in Dachau.
Two months later, it was time to celebrate again: this time the Italian Festa della Repubblica, The Italian Republic Day which was celebrated last week and was honored in Israel with a series of initiatives appealing to everyone’s taste.

Double Life – Smart Shows
By Daniela Fubini*

As if we didn't have enough misunderstandings with the biggest (and heaviest) of our rather few allies, in Israel the "State of the Union" was until last year a television show: the comedy/political "Matzav Ha-Uma". As soon as my Hebrew became good enough to understand about 60% of what they said in the one hour program, the 4 comedians plus guest stars, I got addicted. For way too long I was missing some witty para-journalism and Jon Stewart was a painful nostalgia of my New York days - and nights, when I used to leave any weekday event or evening out, in time to be in front of the tv by 11.00pm o'clock.
This year, the show has moved channels, and changed name into a much less evocative "Gav Ha-Uma" (something like the backbone of the State), but the fab four stayed the same and that’s what matters. My favorite part is when redhead presenter Lior Shlein invites the group to come up with imaginary laws that should make Israel more advanced, clean, educated, friendly with the neighbors and so on.
