Hypocrisie
By Guido Vitale*

(Noam Ohama)

SUMMER BOOKS
Trieste
By Daniela Gross

In the first pages of Trieste, Haya Tedeschi, an elderly woman living in Gorizia in northeastern Italy, waits to be reunited with her son, who was born as part of Himmler’s Lebensborn project. Reflecting on her own life, Haya brings us in the middle of the tragedy of the World War II and of the Italian Holocaust. To tell this story, the Croatian novelist, playwright and critic Dasa Drndic mixes trial transcripts, witness statements, biographical sketches, photographs. Just in the middle of the book, stand out the names of some 9,000 Jews for whose death Italy bears responsibility. A monumental, Sebaldian and deeply painful reading.

Bibi Netanyahu to Visit Italy

By Rossella Tercatin

“The Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu will visit Italy at the end of the month. The announcement comes only a few weeks after the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi visited Jerusalem for the first time since he took office. During the visit the Italian PM invited Netanyahu to Italy.
According to Italian media, Netanyahu will start his trip by visiting the Universal Exhibition in Milan, where Israel is present with a pavilion located at the very center of the Expo site. The Israeli Prime Minister will then spend two days in Florence, Renzi’s native city, which he often chooses over Rome as the venue for State meetings.

Greece, the Jewish Community and the Crisis

By Francesca Matalon

“Greek Jews are coping with the crisis in the exact same way as every other Greek citizens do: we anxiously stand in line at ATMs to withdraw fifty euros a day and are concerned about our future in Europe.” This is the straight-to-the-point answer given by Moses Constantinis, president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, when asked about the reaction of Greek Jews to the difficult situation that their country, on the edge of bankruptcy, is facing.

Fearful Racists
By Anna Foa*

Led by rightwing extremists from Militia and Casa Pound, the “Italian citizens” who hurled abuse at some refugees in Rome and in Treviso - in Veneto, in the North of Italy - setting their belongings on fire, aiming for their expulsion and claiming that they “do not want niggers,” deny being racist. “We are acting out of fear - say the protesters - we fear the immigrants, and this is the reason we don’t want them.” This kind of explanation has been circulating in the mass media for a long time. What is this fear? Are we so sure that it has nothing to do with racism?

*Anna Foa is an historian. The article was translated by Isabella Favero, student at the Scuola superiore traduttori e interpreti di Trieste.
