SUMMER BOOKS
Lessico famigliare
By Daniela Gross

Family Sayings – as it translates in English - is a semi-biographical, ironic, and delicate chronicle of the daily life of an Italian Jewish family between 1920-1950. Natalia Ginzburg tells us about her father, the renowned histologist Giuseppe Levi, their friends, their habits, and their linguistic uses. In these pages there are many tragic events, such as the death in jail of her husband Leone Ginzburg, a noted anti-fascist, or the suicide of the writer Cesare Pavese. But above all, this amazing book - published in 1963 - is full of a persistent joy of life and is evidence of an extraordinary inner strength.

Renzi: “Italy Stands by Israel
in the Fight against Terrorism”

By Rossella Tercatin

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi highlighted the friendship and the common values Italy and Israel share in a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night. “Italy stands by Israel in the fight against terrorism and in the pursuit of peace for the whole region,” Renzi said.
The press conference held in the historic Palazzo dei Cinquecento in Florence marked the conclusion of Netanyahu's three-day visit to Italy, the first overnight official visit abroad since he was re-elected in March.
Netanyahu divided his time between Milan, where he visited the World Expo, and Florence, where he met with Renzi. The Prime Minister of Israel also met with a delegation of Italian Jewish leaders, including among others, the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities Renzo Gattegna and the president of the Jewish Community of Florence Sara Cividalli.

Netanyahu in Florence,
behind the Scenes

By Adam Smulevich

"What a great place, I’ve got an idea: why don’t we celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary here next year?" Visiting the fascinating synagogue of Florence, Sarah Netanyahu, alongside her husband didn't hide her enthusiasm. The couple visited the synagogue at the end of the Shabbat service during a relaxed day as tourists in Florence.
Welcoming the Netanyahus was a delegation of the local Jewish Community composed of president Sara Cividalli, chief rabbi Joseph Levi with his wife Shulamit and his daughter Tamar, general secretary Emanuele Viterbo, architect Renzo Funaro, city councilor Sara Funaro.
"Baruchim Habaim (Welcome) Bibi and Sara,” they said. The couple, escorted into the synagogue, showed appreciation for its Moorish architecture and its history, recounted in detail step by step.

Primo Levi: a New Insight
By Ada Treves

The most decisive answer was given by Manuela Consonni, senior lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who recently became the head of Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism (author of L’eclisse dell’antifascismo. Resistenza, questione ebraica e cultura politica in Italia dal 1943 al 1989): “It is clear that the author wants to present himself as the biographer of Primo Levi. Indeed, I do think Marco Belpoliti is one of a kind, he was brave enough to break his neck to understand Levi; he read and tried to analyse and grasp everything about him”. On the other hand, the opinion of Anna Foa (respected Italian historian, author of Portico d’Ottavia 13. Una casa del ghetto nel lungo inverno del ’43) is not as sharp: “This is, without any doubt, a really important book that aspires to be the ultimate biography. For now. Belpoliti has become Primo Levi’s exegete, or, at least, that’s the way he presents himself, though to me this huge volume looks, in a way, as the autobiography of Belpoliti himself. As if Levi influenced his life, and his story”.

Double life - Iran in Tel Aviv
By Daniela Fubini*

Just over a week ago, a large number of Tel Aviv citizens and tourists who are able to read Hebrew were caught in the typical act of scratching the top of their heads, looking for answers to a very big question mark hovering on Kikar Rabin. Small groups took selfies, other people posted and tweeted pictures worldwide and made quickly viral the source of the confusion and amusement: a six floors tall, white based sign saying "soon opening: Embassy of Iran in Israel". In the Kikar, of all places. Chutzpa
.
