èStoria, Exploring Current Affairs
and History in Gorizia

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

The thirteenth edition of the festival èStoria, closed on May 28, has brought Gorizia's culture festival far beyond the borders of the region, to enter the Italian cultural calendar.
The city is located in the Isonzo region, once a controversial strategic place of elegance between Mittel-Europe and Italy, and the forger of some of the best Jewish intellectuals of old Europe, but later wounded by the border, the Iron Curtain. Currently an area of experimental cross-border growth and collaboration between East and West, Gorizia has confirmed to be the right meeting point for all those who see the knowledge of History as a fundamental resource.

Inspired by the Righteous, a Charter
for Responsibilities

img header

By Daniel Reichel

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni signed the Charter of Responsibilities, a document highlighting fundamental universal values conceived by Gabriele Nissim, president of the nonprofit organization Gariwo (Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide).
“We are living in a historic moment where many of the achievements of the last decades are being questioned. This is a moment where tension and chaos on the international stage seem to increase a lot, meanwhile our societies are under a climate of insecurity. Italy will continue to foster relationships of collaboration, friendship and cooperation with the great protagonists of the international scene,” said Gentiloni.

100 Millionen für verborgene Schätze

img

IT HAPPENED TOMORROW

Jerusalem

img

By Guido Vitale

"Three old men who are better known for being young men stood on Wednesday morning where they had 50 years earlier: in Jerusalem's Old City at the limestone retaining wall that is one of the holiest places for Jews. In a moment frozen in a famous photo, the three men, who were among the paratroopers who had pushed through Jerusalem until they stood at the Western Wall itself in 1967, looked up in awe at a holy site that had been barred to Jews for almost two decades. "We will never give back Jerusalem," one of the three, Zion Karasenti, now 74, said as the anniversary arrived on Wednesday, at 10: 08 a.m. "If they have to capture it again, we will be in the front line." (Ian Fisher – The New York Times)

img

By Mara Vigevani*

“Unfortunately, Tariq Ramadan has not been able to reach Italy because of health reasons and therefore in the afternoon he will not be physically present at the presentation of the book ‘The Muslim and Agnostic’, as scheduled in the Erickson Center in Trento.”
With this statement, a representing of the Erickson Center of Trento explains that the long-awaited arrival of what is considered one of the most influential intellectuals of Western Islam and professor at Oxford University will not be in Trento today to present the book written with Riccardo Mazzeo.
