Contest to Celebrate Jewish Music
to Take Place in Italy

An international composition contest for works inspired by the Jewish tradition has been promoted by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI). The contest is open to participants from all European countries and Israel, and will be held every two years. The first edition is devoted to the fiftieth anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem: composers are asked to present creations that celebrate this.

“We asked ourselves what was happening in the contemporary Jewish music landscape. We thought that exploring this topic could be both an opportunity to keep the rich tradition of Jewish music alive, and a great tool to teach people about Judaism,” explains Maestro Riccardo Joshua Moretti, coordinator of the Committee for Culture of the UCEI Council, who promoted the idea together with a member of UCEI board David Meghnagi. Moretti, a composer himself, musician and conductor, will head the panel to review the material sent by participants.

“We think that this is a wonderful occasion to bring together young talents from all over Europe and Israel, and to promote their creations. Too often, Jewish music is associated just with klezmer. We, however, would like to highlight that there is much more than that to Jewish music. For this reason it is important to emphasize that the contest is open to all genres: contemporary classic music, liturgical music, even pop”.

Registration for the contest is due by November 5, 2017. The final phase of the contest will be held on December 11 and 12, 2017, at the Casa della Musica in Parma, an Italian city renowned for its musical tradition.

Italy and the Figures of Prejudice

Despite the consolidation of the signs of recovery, the current sentiment of the country remains fundamentally negative and retreating: external problems (the unresolved economic crisis, immigration, criminality and corruption) are the main factors causing this widespread sentiment. The basic request therefore remains that of "being defended", not only from an economic-social point of view, even if it is central, but also from an identity crisis whose role is becoming more and more obvious. That has been brought out during the presentation of the survey “Stereotypes and prejudices of the Italians” strongly supported by the Fondazione CDEC (Foundation Jewish Contemporary Documentation Centre) in Milan in collaboration with the market research company IPSOS.
Carried out as part of a project on the history of anti-Semitism coordinated by the State University of Milan, with the participation of La Sapienza University of Rome, Genoa University and Pisa, the research (presented this morning at the Jewish Centre Il Pitigliani) has been compared with a previous survey conducted in 2007. Of great interest and topicality are the ideas emerging on the subject of prejudice (anti-Jewish, but not only); The prelude to further in-depth analysis will be carried out in the coming months, as underlined in their speeches by both the CDEC editor Luzzatto Voghera and sociologist Betti Guetta, responsible for the foundation's anti-Semitism Observatory.

Rome, Portico D’Ottavia
to Undergo Refurbishment

Portico d’Ottavia, the heart of Jewish life in Rome and the main square of the ancient ghetto is going to undergo refurbishment. Among other things, the flooring, made of traditional “sanpietrini” (little square blocks), will be completely renovated.
The project is the first initiative of the newly founded Portico d’Ottavia Association. It was presented by the president of Rome’s Municipal Area 1, Sabrina Alfonsi, and by superintendent Francesco Prosperetti. The funds will be entirely provided by the residents and shop owners of the area.

Desde hace unos días sigo recibiendo mensajes y correos electrónicos de amigos, en los que me preguntan invariablemente: “¿Ya sabías que Louis Armstrong hablaba yiddish?” o bien: “¿Sabías que Louis Armstrong recibió su primera trompeta de la familia de judíos que lo había criado?”. Sí, efectivamente esto no es nuevo para mí, porque hace unos años vi un documental dedicado a él. Pero, como ocurre en cualquier película, libro o archivo para escudriñar, siempre encontramos más o menos lo que ya estamos buscando y no vemos (o olvidamos enseguida) la información que en aquel momento no es necesaria para nuestra propia investigación.

Yom Kippur, but Different

You live part of your life somewhere in the large portion of the globe that is not Israel, then one day you choose to pack up and come live in Israel and honestly, the last thing you'd think will change in your life is the irremovable, unsinkable and utterly unshrinkable Yom Kippur. And that's where you are so really wrong. Let's start with the times of the fast. Most of us in continental Europe and in the US are used to begin fasting sometime after seven in the evening and ending well after eight, if not later. Oh, those three last hours of thirst and hunger, how tough it was to focus in any kind or prayer.

Modigliani in New York

In the first room of the Jewish Museum’s new exhibit “Modigliani Unmasked,” a case displays two issues of La Libre Parole, the early-20th century French anti-Semitic newspaper founded by Édouard Drumont.
The covers of both feature caricatures of Jewish men, their features overblown and bulbous.
Hung on a nearby wall is Modigliani’s 1908 painting “The Jewess,” a study in jewel-toned oil paints. The subject is, most probably, Modigliani’s mistress Maude Abrantès, a married American Jew whose visage appears in several of the exhibit’s drawings. She appears statuesque and guarded. Her face is slender, her features angular, her bearing aristocratic.
