Italian Rabbis: 'Spirituality must be protected'

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

“We all have the duty to respect public health policies. However, harmony between spirit and body also plays a role in the health of individuals and society,” said Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni, chief Rabbi of Rome. In a note, he commented on the governmental decree on the so-called ‘phase two’, especially on the matter of places of worship.
According to Rabbi Di Segni, even in this scenario, in which the health situation is as alarming as the economic and social collapse it will lead to, “there are ways to ensure safe access and religious gatherings in compliance with health regulations.”
“The government”, said chief Rabbi of Rome, “is making serious and difficult decisions, but it should not neglect the spiritual needs of religious communities, each of them with their peculiarities. It is exactly these communities that ensure social cohesion and development.”

'The hope is to reopen by Shavuot'

“When Italy reopens, spiritual needs are also to be taken into account. This is why I agree with what Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni said on this point.” According to Chief Rabbi of Florence, Gadi Piperno, it is now time to reopen synagogues for worship.
“It is vital to ensure social distancing. All the rules to be set out will obviously be observed. Here in Florence, also thanks to a large-sized temple, we’re thinking about occupying every third seat, every other row.” As Rabbi Piperno said, the Council was considering various options: from measuring the temperature at the entrance to the complex management of people going in and out of the synagogue. “However, our wide spaces will facilitate our work,” he underlined.

'We are working to reopen safely,
but it will take some time'

img header

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

“Rabbis are not doctors. Rabbis have certain responsibilities which are very important, but doctors are the actual health experts. We should listen carefully to the indications we are given and be ready to act and equip ourselves with everything necessary. Of course, we hope we will restart soon. But what happened shows that we must live day by day,” said cautiously Rabbi Yosef Labi, rabbi of Verona.
“We certainly aim to reopen our synagogue,” he continued, “but it will only be done when adequate safety conditions can be ensured. The synagogue’s spaces are well-organized, at least for ordinary needs. Problems may arise at moments of larger turnout, such as Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. These are different situations, which should be assessed in all their facets.”

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

After months of work, the Centre of Contemporary Jewish Documentation (CDEC) in Milan has launched its new and improved website, which introduces the Foundation to the general public in a simple yet effective way.
“Our new website fits the context of the overall change CDEC Foundation has initiated a few years ago, which involves new working methods and a diversified cultural program, in view of a new location as well,” explained CDEC Director Gadi Luzzatto Voghera in the editorial introducing the new platform.
“Reinventing ourselves as an institution,” he continued, “also means being capable of questioning well-established practices, finding new ways, restarting on the basis of the research we have carried out.”

'Italian Jews scrupulously adhere to the rules'

img header
By ANSA staff*

Italian Jews said Monday they would obey a ban on religious gatherings apart from funerals saying that "lives come first" amid the coronavirus emergency.
The head of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI), Noemi Di Segni, said "the Italians Jews and their institutional representatives will scrupulously adhere to what has been laid down (in the government's lockdown-easing decree) with great realism and sense of responsibility".
She said all religious communities "must be aware of the gravity of the moment and pull together, avoiding polemics and contrast that distract us from the primary goal of safeguarding the life and health of all citizens".
