Italian Jewish community, an example
of resilience
By Pagine
Ebraiche staff
The
Jewish Agency for Israel organized a meeting with its chairman Isaac
Herzog and several leaders from communities in the diaspora, including
the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) Noemi
Di Segni.
“Diaspora communities have always made an essential contribution to
Israel. Now the time has come for Israel to do something in the
opposite direction too," Herzog said.
The meeting was an opportunity to present a series of initiatives aimed
at offering support to all those Jewish communities around the world
that are facing major challenges in the light of the pandemic.

Vatican diplomacy’s commitments
and weaknesses: from Israel
to relations with Judaism

By Pagine Ebraiche staff
“We’re
living in a moment of great conflict, including in the Middle East. All
of this is creating an atmosphere in which many discriminations will
probably continue to thrive. We need a lot of work at the grass-roots
level to change hearts,” said Paul Gallagher, Vatican’s Secretary of
Relations between States – the Holy See’s “Foreign Minister”. The
English Archbishop was hosted in a behind-the-scenes meeting on Vatican
diplomacy which was organised by the American Jewish Committee (AJC)
with the participation of Rabbi David Rosen, AJC’s International
Director of Interreligious Affairs, and moderated by journalist Lisa
Billig, AJC Representative in Italy and Liaison to the Holy See. The
meeting was an occasion to address different topics, among which were
engagement in dialogue, the fight against antisemitism, and ongoing
negotiations between the Vatican and Israel.
Translated by Claudia Azzalini and
revised by Sara Facelli, both students at the Advanced School for
Interpreting and Translation of Trieste University and interns at the
newspaper office of the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities.

La N de (Vittorio) Gassmann
Emanuele Calò*
He
Nosotros somos judios. Yo a medias, mi

Attachment or proximity
to God?
By Yaakov Mascetti*
The
fervor or passion of a man for God is traditionally exemplified in the
Torah by the uncompromising behavior of Pinchas in the book of Numbers:
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Pinchas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron
the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites by displaying
among them his passion for Me, so that I did not wipe out the Israelite
people in My passion. Say, therefore, ‘I grant him My pact of
friendship. It shall be for him and his descendants after him a pact of
priesthood for all time, because he took impassioned action for his
God, thus making expiation for the Israelites.’” (Num. 25:10-12).

Jewish Agency says Israel helping Diaspora weather pandemic, in role reversal

By Yaakov Schwartz*
Jewish
Agency head Isaac Herzog cited a “change of paradigm” during the
pandemic era, in which Israel is helping struggling Jewish communities
across the Diaspora – instead of the other way around – after initial
disbursements from an emergency loan fund helped communities stave off
collapse.
Addressing a virtual briefing on Wednesday at which some of the
community heads shared their experiences weathering COVID-19, Herzog
said the Jewish Agency has already provided nearly $10 million in
interest-free loans to 23 Jewish communities in Latin America, Europe,
the former Soviet Union, New Zealand and South Africa – and that
applications for an additional $12 million put the requested amount of
aid at over $22 million.
