While all across the world millions plan to skip Covid-19 vaccine, even though infections climb dramatically, Italian Holocaust survivor and senator for life Liliana Segre launched a touching appeal to vaccination. In what she called a “secular prayer” to anti-vaxxers, which last week generated a large amount of attention in Italy, senator Segre stressed that the choice of getting inoculated or not must not be an ideological issue, but exclusively a health-related one.
“We must decide who we want to trust and, although it seems understood, I get that for someone this might not be so easy. Everyone finds himself alone in front of his own conscience”, read the plea. “So, I can tell you what I'll do: I'll get vaccinated as soon as possible. And I say more: it is a choice that I would have made at any moment of my long life”, wrote the senator, who recently turned 90.
“I have always had vaccines, those considered useful and indispensable, and now I think that getting vaccinated against Covid-19 is a choice that should be spontaneous and natural, for your own good. And above all for the good of others, of all humanity", she added. "So, I am convinced, the year ahead will be of great hope. We all need it”, she concluded launching a message full of positivity.

Rome – La présidente de l’Union des communautés juives d’Italie, Noemi Di Segni, a exprimé sa haute appréciation et sa grande estime pour les efforts de SM le Roi Mohammed VI en faveur de la paix et de l’entente entre les peuples.
Dans une déclaration à la MAP, Mme Di Segni a souligné que “le fait d’œuvrer en faveur de l’entente et de la coexistence entre les peuples, les cultures et les identités constitue aujourd’hui l’un des plus grands défis”, relevant que l’initiative du Souverain contribuera à atteindre cet objectif et aura assurément des résultats “encourageants”. Elle a, dans ce sens, affirmé que la Déclaration tripartite USA-Maroc-Israël constitue un tournant historique qui “donne de l’espoir pour récolter les fruits” de cette initiative, au service notamment de la paix. Pour Mme Di Segni, “l’histoire nous apprend que les échanges entre les pays apportent les meilleurs résultats et les meilleures garanties pour lutter contre toutes les formes d’extrémisme”.

The names of the authors who won the eleventh edition of the Fiuggi Storia prize, created by the historian Piero Melograni and promoted by the Giuseppe Levi-Pelloni Foundation, have recently been announced. Among the winners is Marco Di Porto with his work “Una voce sottile”, a historical novel published by Giuntina, which focuses on the stories of the Jews on the island of Rhodes, Greece and the dramatic impact which the Shoah had on that ancient and rooted nucleus. A world that was reconstructed starting from the author’s grandfather’s story.
The winners of this edition also include Bruno Maida with “I treni dell'accoglienza'' (Einaudi) and Gabriele Ranzato with “La liberazione di Roma” (Laterza), both awarded in the non-fiction category. For the section Biographies, Noemi Ghetti received recognition for the volume “Gramsci e le donne” (Donzelli). Also awarded for historical fiction, aside from Di Porto, is Graziella Monni, author of “Gli amici di Emilio'' (Mondadori).

This year, the last night of Hanukkah was marked by a symbolic lighting of candles, travelling through eight Jewish communities in the Mediterranean that will illuminate us by sharing their Sephardic heritage and traditions. The journey, which is now a video, illuminates the amazing Jewish heritage of Mediterranean and takes the viewer through synagogues, museums, and Jewish quarters from Casale Monferrato, Venezia, and Padova in Italy, to Sarajevo, Paris, Girona, Izmir, and Tel Aviv. While the pandemic forbids traveling, we can take this beautiful journey on line and explore some of the landmarks of the Jewish heritage of the Mediterranean while planning our next trip. The initiative was organized by the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage-AEPJ.

Alors que le monde est aujourd’hui confronté au coronavirus, il est curieux de se rappeler qu’il y a 77 ans, une mystérieuse épidémie, le Syndrome K, a sauvé des vies. Giovanni Borromeo, Vittorio Emanuele Sacerdoti et Adriano Ossicini... Ces trois noms ne vous disent peut-être rien, pourtant ces trois médecins sont à l’origine d’un subterfuge qui a permis de sauver des centaines de juifs italiens pendant l’Occupation nazie à Rome en 1943. Le Dr Borromeo était un anti-fasciste convaincu, ce dernier avait refusé par deux fois un poste de chef dans les hôpitaux romains détenus à l’époque par le Parti National fasciste. Le médecin avait choisi de travailler dans l’hôpital Fatebenefratelli car l’établissement, appartenant à l’Église, était sous la direction de moines catholiques. Géré par l’ordre hospitalier de Saint-Jean-De-Dieu, le lieu faisait office de refuge pour la population juive romaine depuis 1938, bien avant l’arrivée des nazis dans la capitale. Un choix évident donc pour ce médecin qui refusait de devoir s’associer au régime en place. Borromeo va plus loin dans ses convictions et crée une équipe avec deux autres médecins, partageant ses idéaux et son éthique.
