Women at the Top
By Daniela Gross

“I am an entrepreneur, but I'd rather call myself a good Jewish mom.” This is the way Ruth Dureghello, chose to introduce herself during a long interview by Paolo Conti on the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. Last week, Dureghello’s list “Per Israele” (i.e. “For Israel”) won the relative majority of the seats of the Council of the Jewish Community of Rome (12 out of 27).

The newspaper further noted how the most ancient Jewish community in Europe has so far never been lead by a woman, although this doesn’t mean that women don’t play an important role in the Jewish Italian world, since there are women who do guide other Jewish Communities, and a woman, Tullia Zevi, was among the most influential and respected presidents of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (furthermore, in these elections for the Council seats, three out of four lists were lead by women).

Mrs Dureghello - 48 years old, mother of two, with a degree in Law – is certain, wrote Conti, that the issue is not “between old and young people, or between men and women, but between those who can and those who cannot have a role of responsibility.”
“However, Mrs Dureghello admits that a woman at the top of the most ancient Jewish Community of the Diaspora would be a sign of civilization, ‘against fundamentalisms, bigotry, extremisms, mannerisms, or limitations’,” the article concludes.

A Jewish Museum
Inaugurated in Padua

By Francesca Matalon

The new Jewish Museum of Padua (“Museo della Padova ebraica”) was inaugurated on Thursday in the building that once hosted the German synagogue of the city.
“The most important heritage for the Jewish community of Padua is not represented by the objects it possesses, but by the people that lived here,” said Davide Jacur, president of the Jewish Community of Padua and board member of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. The museum aims at telling the story of a community that survived hard times and started a new life again and again.

In Florence, tourists and citizens who want to admire the sunset from the view of Piazzale Michelangelo, located on a hill just east of the city center can enjoy a unique skyline. But for those who would like to have a closer look at Jewish life in Florence, the Jewish Community offers another unique opportunity: for the third consecutive summer on Thursday nights, the Community opens the doors of the synagogue’s gardens for the festival of the Balagan Café.

Which Values for the Economy
By Daniel Reichel

The economy and its inner dynamics are essential to understanding how the world is changing. This is the main idea that inspired the three-day conference, “Markets and Values” (16-18 of June), organized by Pagine Ebraiche in Florence. At the third edition of the conference, the main issues discussed through the lenses of a Jewish perspective were the future of the publishing industry, the roots of economic inequalities connected to the creation of ghettos, the immigration emergency in Europe and how the city of Florence is dealing with it. Also discussed were how Italian society perceives minorities in the country and how technology is capable of simplifying everyday life.

Tasks
By Benedetto Carucci Viterbi*

In the desert, the Israelites followed the divinely-provided cloud cover which accompanied them. They had no way of predicting the length or difficulty of the various stages on their route, but had to continue to perform their daily tasks regardless. This situation recalls the life of each of us, says Rabbi Wolbe: regardless of our current situation (i.e. the length and difficulty of the stage), we should always carry out our tasks to their best of our ability
.
