Pas un
By Guido Vitale*

"Ce n’est pas à moi que devait revenir l’honneur de prendre la parole aujourd’hui, mais à un rabbin qui serait rentré d’un camp de concentration nazi. Hélas! Il n’en est pas un qui puisse se présenter devant vous. Pas un n’est revenu… " (Rav Jacob Kaplan, 6 septembre 1947)

*Guido Vitale is the editor-in-chief of Pagine Ebraiche.

Conta le stelle, se puoi
By Daniela Gross

Moise Levi is 23 years old, when he leaves Fossano for Turin in search of fortune, bringing with him only a chariot full of rags. He will start an incredibly successful clothing trade, will get married, have six sons, and many grandchildren (the title of the book, published in 2008, in English translates to “Count the stars, if you are able” recalling the words of God to Abraham about his descent). Even the World War II won’t hurt Moise’s life, because the author Elena Lowenthal radically changes history as we know it, setting up a lucky plot twist.

A New Head for German Studies in Italy

By Francesca Matalon

Roberta Ascarelli, the newly appointed president of the Italian Institute of Germanic Studies, jokes about her “first day at school”. She was just selected for the post by Minister of Education, University and Research Stefania Giannini to run one of the twelve research bodies in Italy, the only one related to humanities.
Ascarelli comes from a Jewish family from Rome, but her mother is German. She teaches German Literature at the University of Siena, and she has studied and worked also in Vienna, Toronto, Rochester, Harvard and Bonn. Philologist by training, she is an expert, among other things, in Ashkenazi and Yiddish literature.

Moj sin će živjeti i dočekati ponovno rođenje Izraela. Ja to znam. A što je jos važnije,mi Židovi iskupili smo svoju čast kao narod. (Leon Uris, Mila 18)

Srebrenica
By Anna Foa*

Once again, Srebrenica. It is not just my fad: twenty years ago that genocide (let's call things by their real name) broke down Europe's dreams and caused pain and dread. Serbia can show that it is no longer Milosevic's country and that the troops of a brand new butcher like Mladic will not carry out new massacres, but it can do this only by accepting the blame and responsibility for what was done.

*Anna Foa is an historian. This article has been translated in English by Ilaria Modena, student at the Scuola superiore interpreti e traduttori di Trieste, ‎who is doing her apprenticeship within the newsroom of Pagine Ebraiche.
