Italian President Mattarella Expressed Gratitude for the Jewish Brigade

img header

By Adam Smulevich

"There were free men who landed in occupied Italy and spilled their blood for our freedom. To those fallen, from distant nations, we dedicate a grateful remembrance. Their blood is that of our brothers. Among them, we cannot forget the five thousand volunteers of the Jewish Brigade, Italian or not."
With a powerful speech held on April 25, the day Italy celebrates the anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-fascism, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella gave the best answer to those who, riding on hatred and hypocrisy, have tried to disregard the role of the Brigade.

By Daniel Reichel

The Mokéd 5777, the traditional convention of Italian Jewry that takes place every spring in Milano Marittima, is dedicated this year to the Exodus of the Jews from the Arab world and the 50th anniversary of this painful occurrence.
Organized by the Culture and Education Area of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities directed by Rav Roberto Della Rocca, the event was an occasion to discuss several topics with international guests, such as the integration of those Jewish families in Israel as well as in Italy.

In Pisa, A Garden to Remember Rabbi Toaff

img header

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

The city of Pisa has dedicated a public walk and a section of a garden to the memory of Rabbi Elio Toaff two years after he passed away.
Rabbi Toaff, historic chief rabbi of Rome, where he served for many decades, was born in Livorno in 1915 but studied in Pisa at the university and graduated in 1939 after the anti-Jewish Laws had already been promulgated. From Pisa he later joined the Resistance movement in the partisan Garibaldi Brigade. The city always remained important for him.
“We owed something to the figure of Rabbi Elio Toaff, we very much wanted to dedicate a place to him,” commented the deputy mayor Paolo Ghezzi, who promoted the initiative. “The public walk that we are inaugurating is meaningful as a place for reflection; a place where people can come and think.”

Les tenants de la voix blanche

img header

Daniel Sibony*

Never again for any nation: Dedicated to the memory of the 2000 Jews of Corfu who perished in the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau in June 1944.«

Small Talk

img

By Daniela Fubini*

Soon after arriving in Israel, we learn that we must be ready to any question asked in the most random places and by the most random strangers. At point blank, you are typically asked where you are from, where are your ancestors from until the third or fourth generation, how much you earn, how much you pay for rent and why you live where you live and not in a different place.
Israeli small talk is like us: practical and "tachless". That's why one thing I like about the otherwise depressing memorial season in Israel is going into the Kikar, Rabin's square, and mixing with the crowd in silence. The square is always full of people sitting on plastic chairs, always too close to one another, and most are in a very kind mood and absolutely not about to ask personal questions for pure curiosity.

The Lost Legacy Of Slain Jewish-Italian Boxer Efrati

img

By Allon Sinai*

Leone Efrati was thousands of kilometers away from Europe when World War II broke out in September 1939.
He should have been safe from the Holocaust.
Born in Rome on May 16, 1916, the Jewish-Italian boxer moved to the United States in 1938 in the hope of advancing his career.
At the height of his career, Efrati was ranked by the National Boxing Association as the No. 10 featherweight in the world. He received a title shot for the NBA featherweight crown against Leo Rodak in December 1939, losing a narrow decision.
