Liliana Segre, Italian Holocaust survivor and senator has asked the Minister of Interior and Northern League leader Matteo Salvini to prevent a gathering organized by the far right group Lealtà e azione (Loyalty and Action).
“It is requested to know whether the Minister is aware of the danger of the mentioned event; and whether he does not think it necessary to revoke the authorization. This, in order to avert the carrying out of an initiative of a clear anti-Constitutional nature that offends the fundamental values of our Republic and of any form of civil coexistence”, Segre wrote.
Notwithstanding, the gathering called “Festa del Sole” (Sun Festival) took place on July 6 and 7 in the town of Abbiategrasso, on the outskirts of Milan in a public location.

Israeli ambassador to Rome Ofer Sachs met with the Minister of the Interior and deputy Matteo Salvini at the Viminale palace last week.
Among the topics they discussed were cybersecurity, the fight against crime and terrorism and immigration issues.
“It was a very positive meeting that confirmed the high level of cooperation between our two countries in many fields”, Sachs told Pagine Ebraiche.
The ambassador invited Salvini to Israel. “For now it is only an invitation, there is no date yet, but it should happen in the next few months”.
“I would like to hold a bilateral conference between our governments to strengthen all aspects of our relations.  We already have a good cooperation in the security sector, a cooperation that I intend to expand. A trip to Israel is among the priorities on my international agenda and it should happen in the fall at the latest”, commented Salvini, as reported in a statement by the Ministry.

Pisa, the Jewish Heritage by the Leaning Tower

img header

By Austin Marques*

The city of Pisa, Italy is one of the centers of European medieval art and home to impressive architectural structures. The Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) is home to four Catholic monuments: the Cathedral, the Baptistry, the Campanile (known in English as “the leaning tower”), and the Monumental Cemetery. But few people know that Pisa has played a very significant role in the Jewish heritage of Italy.
It is thought that Pisa is the first city in the Tuscany region in which Jewish families settled. Historical records show the purchase of a house by a Jewish merchant in the year 850. Another telling piece of evidence is Benjamin of Tudela’s account of his journey from his native Navarre to Jerusalem. In his book he mentions that he came across 20 Jewish families living in Pisa when he stopped there in 1165 on his way to the Holy Land.

Perseguidos

img

David Bidussa*

[Salmos, 12, 2-6].

Dealing with more than One Internal Voice

img

By Yaakov Mascetti*

My friend Mendel, who refuses to be boxed into the term haredi so I will refrain from doing so, is one of a kind – he lacks, from what I can see from outside, the internal struggles, the vicious strife between more than one force driving his actions. Of course he has his issues, and of course not everything is perfect in his world, and he deserves my respect and care because, like all of us, he is leading his own personal battles. It’s just that my friend Mendel leads his own personal daily battles with more of a sense of equilibrium, instead of falling on one side and then lapsing onto the other – which is, of course, the way I deal with things.

The Wonderful Cookie Called 'Pizza ebraica'

img headerBy Rachel Rummel*

Rome’s Jewish quarter isn’t perfumed by the aromas of savory pizza dough. Rather, caramelizing sugars, just-burnt nuts, raisins, and candied citrus waft along the cobblestone. Italians call this creation pizza ebraica, which means “Jewish pizza,” even though it’s a bar cookie. (Technically, the literal translation is “Hebraic pizza.”)
Today, only one kosher bakery specializing in pizza ebraica remains in the former Jewish ghetto. The family-owned Pasticceria il Boccione has been in operation for nearly two centuries. The owners suspect that Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition brought the dish to Rome via Sicily, which was then-ruled by the Spanish. At the time, pizza simply meant “pie,” which doesn’t specify a sweet or savory leaning.
