Rivlin in Rome: “The Connection Between Italy and Israel is Strong”

The President of Israel Reuven Rivlin visited Rome last week. On his agenda were meetings with his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella and with prime minister Giuseppe Conte.
Speaking with Conte Rivlin highlighted the friendship between the two countries and also remarked on the importance of putting pressure on Iran “as an essential step in the fight against its’ nuclear armaments”.

Piero Terracina Turns 90

Piero Terracina turned 90. He was born on November 12, 1928 in Rome and survived the Shoah. The present given to him by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities is a Chanukkia, the symbol of the upcoming Festival of lights, that embodies values such as the fight of light against darkness, hope against obscurity.
The family wanted to pay tribute to an entire life serving historical truth with many friends who came to the Jewish Centre Il Pitigliani to celebrate this important achievement with Piero and his loved ones. One for all, taking part in the event was Sami Modiamo, who shared with Terracina the terrible experience in Auschwitz and the consequent journey of working through it, and finding the courage of bearing witness for the benefit of new generations. A hug between the two survivors opened a joyful night, full of songs and music. The celebration ended with the traditional cutting of the cake.

Milan, l’art pour construire notre avenir

L’art pour la Mémoire, pour rappeler la douleur mais aussi pour laisser un message positif de reconstruction et résilience. Voilà quelques-unes des suggestions avancées par cette exposition appelée “Souvenirs Futurs 4.0 : ce qui se trouve au bout du quai”, présentée en avant-première à la presse dans ces dernières heures, et qui sera ouverte au public à partir du 14 novembre au Mémorial de la Shoah de Milan. “L’exposition des Souvenirs Futurs 4.0 a pour but de raconter comment le présent que nous sommes en train de vivre est déjà futur, et comment ce present/futur doit être la ligne directrice pour nous rappeler les souvenirs, et pour éviter la répétition des erreurs du passé, en essayent en quelque sorte de les comprendre” a dit le commissaire d’exposition Ermanno Tedeschi.

Eso escribía Carlo Levi hace 80 años en una libreta que luego Einaudi publicó en 1946 con el título Paura della Libertà (literalmente, “El miedo a la libertad”). En las últimas semanas, este libro, reeditado por Neri Pozza, ha vuelto a las librerías. ¿Por qué?

A Cute Dumbo-Octopus

The doubt gripped me for some weeks: the choice between going back to my random-thoughts writing and staying in my mourning silence. In the last months a vast assortment of facts stole my words, one after another: before a word of astonishment, horror, disgust could be pronounced, something else would happen and steal words and attention.
The feeling of having reached a point where so much should be said, but it is so hard to find where to start from, that it is easier to abandon the undertaking. The Italian political situation that has cleared ignorance and aggressiveness through the customs of acceptance; the Pittsburgh attack, recalling Toulouse and the Hypercacher and many more, reminding us that Jews are never safe.

How members of Italy's Jewish community were stripped of their status as Italians

The 80th anniversary of Mussolini’s anti-Jewish Racial Laws have been marked in Italy with ceremonies and exhibitions.
The 1938 Royal Decree — which excluded Jews from public office and higher education, saw their civil rights restricted and their books banned — took effect on November 17, ending centuries of peaceful Jewish integration in the country.
The first shock-wave had come four months previously with the publication of the Racial Manifesto on July 13, mooting the concept of a “pure Italian race” of Aryan descent. A census of the Jews followed on August 22, singling out the Jews — all 58,412 of them — as not Aryan and therefore not Italian.
Commemorations this year for what has been described as “one of the darkest pages in Italian history” began in Trieste, the city in the north-east in which Benito Mussolini first announced the laws, where a plaque was unveiled by the local council and Jewish community.
But it is an interactive exhibition at the Italian President’s official residence in Rome that truly highlights the Racial Laws’ fateful link in a chain of events that led many Italian Jews to the extermination camps.
