Forty years of Ha Keillah
By Guido Vitale*

The Jewish magazine Ha Keillah, based in Turin, has celebrated its fortieth anniversary. I had the opportunity to address briefly the friends who have chosen to take part in the joyous birthday party. It happens too often, unfortunately, to see that a Jewish papers is treated with indifference. Sometimes, it never makes it out of the cellophane envelope it is sent in, and therefore it will never find a reader. However, I never saw this happening to Ha Keillah. This is another reason to celebrate this anniversary and to face the next forty years with courage.

Wall of Art
By Daniela Gross

An impressive “Western Wall” composed by the suitcases of Jewish deportees greets the visitors at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Titled “All the World Futures”, the major contemporary art exhibition, which opened last week, this year explores how artists react to the upheavals of our time. Not by chance, its curator Okwui Enwezor has chosen as a central artist in the exhibition Fabio Mauri, the author of the “Western Wall” (1993).

The work and the life of Mr. Mauri were recalled, on April 19, by Arthur Lubow on The New York Times. As he highlighted, as a teenager, Fabio Mauri “reacted with profound and paralyzing shock” to the horrible images of the concentration camp victims portrayed on the newspapers after the Second World War. This was his turning point, which, after terrible sufferance (for eight years he shuttled between psychiatric hospitals and monasteries) led him to new forms of art.

He devoted his creativity to representing how the media manipulated and shaped consciousness, and in his artistic trajectory the Shoah always had a central position. With the “Western Wall”, the Venice Biennale presents the installation “Evil Numbers”, a nonsensical mathematical formula facing an image of Goebbels at the “degenerate art” exhibition in Munich in 1937.

Another controversial performance piece is on display. Titled “Jewess”, it had its debut in 1971 and shows a nude young woman, cutting off her hair and pasting them in the shape of a Star of David onto the mirror in front of her. The scene evokes “the haircuts given to Auschwitz prisoners on the way to the gas chambers”. We see the woman essentially through the mirror, which acts as a sort of screen reflecting her shock along with ours.

Pagine Ebraiche Honors
Rabbi Toaff

By Rachel Silvera

The new issue of Pagine Ebraiche is dedicated to the late Rabbi Elio Toaff, one of the most important rabbis of Italian Jewry, who passed away few weeks ago.
Pagine Ebraiche collected some of the memories of his former students (many of them currently rabbanim of Italian Jewish Communities), as well as of the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities Renzo Gattegna, the president of the Community of Livorno Vittorio Mosseri and the president of the Council of Italian Rabbis, rav Giuseppe Momigliano. Each recalled the impact of Rabbi Toaff not only in extraordinary circumstances, but also on everyday life issues.

Humans of Israel - Waleed

By Jonathan Misrachi

"This morning was freezing cold, but it was a pretty successful morning! Like everyday, I woke up at 4.30, and after a cup of hot black coffee and two cigarettes I went for a ride on my bicycle and I rushed through Rehov Aganà to reach the port of Akko. Here, as I have been doing for the past 50 years, I took the same blue fishing boat with which I sail along the Mediterranean seashore trying to fish as many fishes as possible. Afterwards, I usually go to the Shuk, where I meet some of my children or nephews who come to help me selling the fish that I caught. At dusk my wife comes back from the school where she teaches English, our daughters and sons come to us and I bring home what's left from the working day, happy, tired and ready for the following day."
