Jewish Manga: an Exhibit in Venice

An exhibition featuring depictions of Jewish traditions and culture in the style of manga will be inaugurated at the Venice Jewish Museum on March 20, 2019.
The artwork will include 25 panels in pen-&-ink and watercolour by illustrator Thomas Lay. Lay studied at the National Drama Academy in Paris. He later began his career in Japan at age 25 drawing at the studio of Yumiko Igarashi, creator of famous manga series such as Candy Candy and Georgie”.

Das Ziel ist ehrgeizig: Europa herumzukommen, um es daran zu erinnern, was es bedeutet, Europäer zu sein; den Kontinent zu durchqueren, um den Populismus und die Politik der Unfähigkeit zu bekämpfen, durch eine Show eine ausgestreckte Hand den Wählern anzubieten, die sich mit einer gewalttätigen Mittelmäßigkeit abgefunden haben, um sie gemeinsam zu bekämpfen. Die Herausforderung des französischen Philosophen Bernard-Henri Lévy, seine persönliche Kampagne für die Europawahl vom 26. Mai, begann im Theater Franco Parenti in Mailand. Nach Ansicht des großen Publikums hat sie wahrscheinlich bereits ihr erstes Ufer gefunden: Die Halle applaudiert ihm am Ende der 90 Minuten, in denen Lévy an die kulturelle Größe Europas und an die Werte, die uns vereinen erinnert, und die diejenigen, die für den Zerfall des alten Kontinents, von Putin bis zur heutigen italienischen Regierung, verantwortlich sind, unbestritten angreift.

City of Spezia To Erect a Monument
to Its Role as the ‘Gateway to Zion’

The Italian city of Spezia, in the Liguria region, will erect a monument to celebrate its role as the ‘gateway to Zion’. After the end of the Second World War, thousands of Jewish survivors clandestinely sailed from its port to reach the shores of British-controlled Palestine. Among the ships that departed from there was the famous Exodus.
The city’s government launched a competition to present projects for such monument, including the restoration of the Pagliari Pier. Among the members of the examining board were Orly Bach, granddaughter of Captain Arazi, who supervised the operations in 1946, and chief rabbi of Genoa Giuseppe Momigliano.

Installation by Edmund de Waal will highlight Venice’s Jewish Ghetto during 58th Biennale

Coinciding with the beginning of the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale happening this year, an installation by author and ceramicist Edmund de Waal will highlight the floating city’s 500-year-old Jewish Ghetto. psalm, which will run from May 7th until September 29th, will consist of two exhibitions between two different locations within the Venetian district of Cannaregio.
One portion of de Waal’s exhibition will be in a 16th-century synagogue found in the Ghetto Novo. The artist’s project statement for this section of the exhibition states: ‘[n]ew installations of porcelain, marble and gold [displayed in 12 vitrines] will reflect the literary and musical heritage of this extraordinary place. For the first time the Women’s Gallery within the synagogue will hold contemporary art.’
Meanwhile, the second part of psalm will be located in the 15th-century Aula Magna room, which is on the ground floor of the Ateneo Veneto. The building, most often used for cultural events now, will house a pavilion built by de Waal. It will hold 2,000 books written by exiled writers spanning nearly 2,000 years, from Ovid to present day writers – each of which will be translated. On the exterior of the pavilion, de Waal will inscribe the names of various libraries that have been lost through the years. Drawing from the Renaissance printing of the Talmud by Daniel Bomberg (1483-1549), the pavilion will contain four glass cases of porcelain vessels as well. Harking back to Bomberg, who was one of the most important and influential printers during his time, adds a unique layer to psalm as he employed rabbis at his Venetian publishing house.
