A Fortunate Italian Jew by Guido Vitale* This week will finally see the publication (in Italian) of the latest volume of memoirs of a truly extraordinary Italian Jew, Vittorio Dan Segre, entitled “Storia dell'ebreo che voleva essere eroe” ("Story of the Jew who wanted to be a hero"). Thirty-five years after the publication of his outstanding "Storia di un ebreo fortunato" ("Memoirs of a Fortunate Jew: An Italian Story"), many are eager to read the rest of his chronicle. *Guido Vitale is the editor-in-chief of Pagine Ebraiche.   Italian Word of the Week UN ANNO DOLCE by Daniela Gross The whole expression sounds as “Che sia un anno dolce come il miele” (“May this year be as sweet as the honey”) and translates the traditional Hebrew wish for Rosh Hashanah. It is quite common to hear it in these days in the Italian Jewish Communities even if it is maybe an expression more related to the oldest generation, for whom the Hebrew was still distant and generally unknown. Anyway, beyond any linguistic distinction in Italy these are the days when you really feel a new year approaching. It is the Rosh Hashanah, of course, but it is also that strong feeling of a season of restarting. After the long August vacation, the schools have reopened less than two weeks ago and with the scholastic year’s beginning also the work takes its habitual rhythms as is the political scene. In these days - when you realize that even the climatic season is changing, the leaves begin to fall and the day are definitely shorter - to prepare yourself to a new cycle sounds so natural and right. I simply would like to wish to all our readers “Che sia un anno dolce come il miele”.		FOOD A Very Italian Rosh Hashanah By Rossella Tercatin Everyone knows about apples and honey. But when it comes to Rosh HaShanah dishes, there is much more to say. “May you bring upon us a sweet New Year (Shanah Tovah Umetukah)”, the words one is supposed to say before eating an apple dipped in honey is fairly well known, considering that “Shanah Tovah Umetukah” is the traditional Jewish New Year greeting. But in the same chapter of the Shulchan Aruch (the fundamental code of Jewish Law) that prescribes eating apples and honey, the list of foods that should be served on Rosh HaShanah is much longer. A list that is an essential part of the Rosh HaShanah dinner that is celebrated on both nights of the holiday by Sephardic Jews as well as Italians, who not surprisingly, have developed quite a few recipes that are especially related to the local tradition of every Jewish community throughout Italy.
