SUMMER BOOKS
(Non) si può avere tutto
By Daniela Gross

This largely autobiographical novel by Gheula Canarutto Nemni tells the story of an Italian Jewish orthodox woman in Milan. She marries at 19 years old and struggles to get a degree, to find a job, and to grow a Jewish family. However, it is really difficult to find a balance among these paths. In other words, maybe we cannot have it all (as the title reads in English).

Italian Jews and Italy
By Rossella Tercatin

The president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, Renzo Gattegna, met with the president of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, last week. During the meeting which took place at the Quirinale Palace (the official residence of the president), Gattegna spoke about the history and the role of the Jewish community in Italy and expressed his gratitude for Mattarella’s acts, such as mentioning Stefano Gaj Taché (the 2-year-old who was killed in front of the Great Synagogue of Rome in 1982) as the symbol of the fight against terrorism.

Italian Jewish Heritage
Goes Online

By Francesca Matalon

There are synagogues, museums, cemeteries and historic sites, without forgetting that when it comes to Italy you can’t help but mention food. All of them are part of the great Jewish Italian heritage. All of them, the 'imperdibili', the must-see places, are now a click away thanks to the new website called, Italian Routes of Jewish Heritage. The new interactive maps were developed by the Foundation for Jewish Heritage in Italy (FBCEI), as part of a project of the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage (AEPJ).
Italy is now part of a European network that connects the Routes of Jewish Heritage throughout many different countries.

Primo, Writing about the Horror
By Danielle Rockman*

Once in an interview, Primo Levi said, “I am a chemist. But my existence was marked by two fundamental facts. The first is imprisonment at Auschwitz. The second is having written about my imprisonment at Auschwitz.”
In January 1945, Primo Levi was finally liberated from Auschwitz after eleven months in the death camp, not knowing that his experiences there would consume him for the rest of his life.

* Danielle Rockman is a student at Muhlenberg College (Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA).

Double life - Present Past
By Daniela Fubini*

On my way to a meeting last week, to a place I had been before in the heart of Yafo, I found my way blocked by something that looked a lot like an archaeological camp. Too curious to simply find another access to my destination, I stopped and went closer. Yes, definitely, young men and women under a canopy made with thin net, wearing hats that covered their necks as well as the head, were quite clearly scooping the sand and stones in what was until weeks ago a normal, boring secondary street. I was absolutely mesmerized, for a second a thought of joining the youth in the sand, forget about the high heels and office outfit
