IT HAPPENED TOMORROW Midsummer

vitaleBy Guido Vitale*

For all Italians the mid August weekend traditionally represents a moment of meditation before resuming work and study.
For the Italians Jews especially, this season was more intense and more agitated than ever. Conflict in the Middle East, terrorist attacks against Israel, threats of a rising anti-Semitism in Europe have darkened the horizon more than the continuous waves of bad weather that characterized this Summer. Future is uncertain, but Italians Jews should remember the lesson that has enabled their survival in two millennia of Diaspora: problems are also a great opportunity for a new beginning. And the month of Elul on our doorstep is the right season to address them.
