ANTISEMITISM – A UCEI protocol against hatred

According to a report released in February by the Observatory on Antisemitism of the Jewish Contemporary Documentation Center (CDEC) in Milan, “in Italy, we are dealing with an increase in antisemitism not seen since the end of WWII.” To address this issue, the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) has implemented a structured protocol for handling complaints and reporting them to the authorities. A list of accredited lawyers has been created to support the National Strategy to Combat Antisemitism, presented by General Pasquale Angelosanto, in collaboration with the Observatory for Security Against Acts of Discrimination (OSCAD), the interforce unit of the Italian National Police and the Carabinieri, the Italian Office Against Racial Discrimination (UNAR), the CDEC, and the Prefectures.

Complaints are forwarded to the Complaints and Reports Office (USD), which lists each complaint in an internal database. If necessary, the USD acquires further information and reports the case to the authorities. If a report has penal relevance, it is submitted to a group of dedicated lawyers who decide what actions should be taken. For serious offences against individuals and institutions, the USD proceeds with complaints or lawsuits, involving specialized lawyers as necessary. The UCEI has directly provided legal assistance, joined as a civil party, and participated as an offended party in various lawsuits to support plaintiffs.
