UCEI Council First Meeting, Black Smoke

Those expecting the election of a new UCEI president and executive board will have to wait until the next meeting of the Board of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. Elected on December 14, the UCEI Board met for the first time in Rome on January 11. The meeting was convened by Andrea Pesaro, the delegate of the Jewish Community of Ferrara and the UCEI Board most senior member.
The assembly’s first task was to elect the Rabbinical Council. From a list of five names provided by the Italian Rabbinical Assembly, the Board selected Rabbis Ariel Di Porto (manhig of the Beth Shalom synagogue in Rome), Giuseppe Momigliano (chief rabbi of Genoa), and Riccardo Di Segni (chief rabbi of Rome).
Regarding the election of the UCEI president, none of the three candidates — Livia Ottolenghi (Ha Bait list), Monique Sasson (Dor Va Dor), and Ruth Dureghello (Lev Echad), all from Rome — obtained the
absolute majority of votes required to secure the presidency (at least 25 out of 49).

The election was therefore postponed until the next Board meeting.
