An Israeli team of experts helps Italy
contain Covid-19 spread

By Pagine Ebraiche staff

A team of Israeli medical experts landed in northern Italy, last week, to help a Piedmont district hospital to cope with a surge in Covid 19 patients. The delegation of 20 doctors and experts from Israel’s Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Israel's largest hospital, will collaborate with doctors of Michele and Pietro Ferrero hospital in Verduno (Cuneo province), which is specialized in Covid 19 treatment and research. The medical mission has been arranged in coordination with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ministries of health in Israel and Italy.
“Israel’s embassy in Italy started this important cooperation in order to support Italy in the painful and complex challenges the country is dealing with”, reads a note by the Israel Ambassador in Rome Dror Eydar. “We were looking for a way of being of help and, as Covid 19 second wave started, we came to know from our friends in Piedmont that the Region was short on doctors and healthcare professionals. So, we tried to do something about it. Since the workload on local staff was particularly heavy, we decided to support it”.

The EU makes move to combat antisemitism

By Pagine ebraiche staff

“Antisemitism is an attack on European values”. So starts the declaration approved on Wednesday by the Council of the European Union to mainstream the prevention of and countering antisemitism in all its forms. The adopted declaration makes the fight against antisemitism a priority of Europe’s executive branch. “Any form of antisemitism, intolerance or racist hatred is incompatible with the values and aims of the European Union and its Member States and must be addressed through decisive action at European and national level” it states. Member states, it reads, have a permanent, shared responsibility to actively protect and support Jewish life. The critical step comes under the leadership of the German presidency of the Council, which is comprised of government ministers from the 27 EU Member States. The European Summit of heads of state and government is expected to formally adopt the declaration this week.

How to light the Hanukkah candles together

By Pagine ebraiche staff

For more than twenty years, the Sunday of Hanukkah, which this year falls on December 13th, has been the opportunity for the Jewish Community of Casale Monferrato to meet hundreds of friends in a light themed day. The date has been confirmed also this year and although it will happen online it is expected to be more crowded than usual, thanks to the international public.
During the event, the president of the Jewish Community Elio Carmi and the Young curator of the prestigious collection of the Museum of Lights Daria Carmi will introduce seven new artists whose work this year becomes part of the collection. Then the kids of Maccabi Monferrato will present a short video dedicated to the Maccabi World Union. On December 10th, an online event organized by the Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah-MEIS will explore the themes of Hanukkah with Elio Carmi and the Chief Rabbi of Padova Aharon Locci.
